This is a blog post about oatmeal. That's right…oatmeal. Keep reading, I promise to make it interesting.
Up until about 3 weeks ago I had NEVER eaten oatmeal for breakfast. Not once. I loved oatmeal cookies, but that's a different story.
I never wanted to try oatmeal, I would turn my nose up at it…regardless of how wonderful it smelled…I just refused to believe any good could become of the stuff.
Instead I relied on a decades old story of me and my first interactions with oatmeal. I was a baby and my grandma tried to feed me oatmeal. I didn't want it, and I spit it back in her face. My mom had tried to tell her, but my grandma just couldn't believe that any child would have a problem with oatmeal! Little did she know!
So from that point forward, no oatmeal for me! My brother ate it, my dad ate it, but I did not. I loved all other types of breakfast cereals and breakfast foods, but not oatmeal.
About three weeks ago, my husband and I decided to visit "the golden arches" and try their new fruit and maple oatmeal. I am trying to eat healthier and I have long known what a healthy food oatmeal can be. So I figured I would give it ONE shot and if it didn't go well, then I would grab an Egg McMuffin and go back to my oatmeal-hatin' ways. And instead, a love affair was born!
I can't tell you exactly how many bowls of oatmeal I've had since then, but sometimes I eat it twice a day! I absolutely love the stuff! I put my own spin on it by mixing in apples or applesauce, but the main point is that I'm making it mine! I feel like I'm eating apple crisp every day, and it's fantastic!
The moral of the story is this: make life yours, and don't let fear, or routine, keep you from finding your passion! You never know how many great bowls of oatmeal you might have let pass you by just because you were too stubborn, afraid, or whatever to try to find life on your own terms. Trust me, I know.
Now, back to my oatmeal…
